How do Wegovy tablets work?

The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the same medicine as the injection. It works the same way: it acts on appetite centres in the brain to reduce hunger and food noise, slows how quickly the stomach empties so you feel full for longer, and helps you eat less without the constant battle against cravings. The difference is simply the format, a daily tablet instead of a weekly injection.

Wegovy tablets or the injection, which is right for you?

Both contain semaglutide. In their main trials, average weight loss was about 14% with the tablet and about 15% with the 2.4mg injection; these were separate trials, so the figures are not a direct comparison. The tablet is once daily, needle free, and must be taken on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait. The injection is once weekly, can be taken with or without food, and has a licensed cardiovascular benefit at 2.4mg. The table below sets out the differences.

How effective are Wegovy tablets?

In the pivotal OASIS-4 trial, adults with overweight or obesity taking oral semaglutide 25mg lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% on placebo, counting everyone who started treatment. About 3 in 10 lost 20% or more. In a separate trial, STEP 1, adults on the 2.4mg weekly injection lost 14.9% over 68 weeks; separate trials are not a direct comparison. Individual results vary.

How do you take Wegovy tablets?

Take one tablet a day on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with up to 120 ml of water. Wait at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other oral medicines. The dose builds gradually from 1.5mg to 4mg, 9mg and then 25mg, with at least a month at each step. Keep the tablets in the original blister pack to protect them from light and moisture. No special temperature storage is needed.

What are the Wegovy tablet doses and how do they increase?

You start at 1.5mg once a day and step up through 4mg and 9mg to the 25mg maintenance dose, spending at least one month at each step. Titrating slowly reduces nausea and other gut side effects. You only ever take one strength at a time, and your pharmacist reviews you before each increase.

Is the Wegovy pill right for you?

The Wegovy pill may be suitable if you are aged 18 to 85, live in the UK, and have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to 29.9 alongside a listed weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. It is not suitable in pregnancy, with a history of pancreatitis, or with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.

What are the serious side effects of Wegovy tablets?

Stop treatment and seek urgent medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain, especially if it spreads to your back, which can be a sign of pancreatitis. The same applies to sudden pain in the upper right of your tummy with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, and to sudden loss of vision. Swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash means call 999.

What happens when you stop Wegovy tablets?

Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular activity. Weight loss naturally slows over time, and stopping without keeping those lifestyle changes commonly leads to weight regain, so we review you regularly and plan any stop together. We will also pause or stop treatment if it is not working for you, if side effects persist, or if you become pregnant.
