Introduction
For anyone who wants the benefits of semaglutide without weekly injections, there's now an alternative. In June 2026 the UK became the first country in Europe to approve an oral GLP-1 medicine for weight loss, the Wegovy pill, a once-daily tablet containing the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. This page explains how well it works, how to take it, who it's for, and how it compares to the injection.

How it works
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the same medicine as the injection. It works the same way: it acts on appetite centres in the brain to reduce hunger and food noise, slows how quickly the stomach empties so you feel full for longer, and helps you eat less without the constant battle against cravings. The difference is simply the format, a daily tablet instead of a weekly injection.

Slower gastric emptying
Food leaves the stomach more slowly, prolonging fullness and reducing snacking.

Pill vs injection
| Wegovy pill | Wegovy injection | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Once-daily tablet | Once-weekly injection |
| Active ingredient | Semaglutide | Semaglutide |
| Max dose | 25mg | 2.4mg (7.2mg for obesity) |
| Average weight loss | ~14% over 64 wks | ~15% over 68 wks |
| Cardiovascular licence | No, at launch | Yes, 2.4mg |
| Taken | Empty stomach, wait 30 min | Any time, with or without food |
| Best for | Needle-averse; daily routine | Weekly convenience; want CV evidence |
The pill and the 2.4mg injection deliver broadly similar weight loss, around 14% to 15% on average. The injection has a licensed cardiovascular benefit and weekly dosing. The pill's advantage is obvious: no needles. It suits people who dislike injections or prefer a daily routine, provided they can take it correctly on an empty stomach.
Clinical evidence
The Wegovy pill's approval was based on the OASIS trial programme. In the pivotal OASIS-4 trial (New England Journal of Medicine, 2025), adults with overweight or obesity taking oral semaglutide 25mg lost an average of 14% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2% on placebo, rising to about 16.6% when taken as prescribed. Nearly 8 in 10 lost at least 5% of their weight, and around 1 in 3 lost 20% or more. An earlier trial, OASIS-1 (The Lancet, 2023), tested a 50mg dose and found around 15% average loss; the 25mg dose taken to market delivered comparable results with better tolerability.
Wharton S et al. NEJM 2025 (OASIS-4); Knop FK et al. Lancet 2023 (OASIS-1).
Yes, but it's not the same product, and the difference matters. Rybelsus is oral semaglutide at 3, 7 or 14mg, licensed only for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is oral semaglutide at up to 25mg, licensed for weight management. Same molecule, different strengths, different licensed use. Using a diabetes tablet for weight loss is off-label; the Wegovy pill is the version actually studied and approved for weight loss.
Taking it correctly
The Wegovy pill only works if it's taken correctly. Take one tablet on an empty stomach when you first wake up, with no more than a sip of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Food and liquid in the stomach dramatically reduce how much semaglutide is absorbed. This daily routine is the main trade-off versus the weekly injection.

Titration
At least one month at each step. Titrating slowly reduces nausea and other gut side effects.

FAQ
The Wegovy pill is a once-daily tablet form of semaglutide, the same GLP-1 medicine as the Wegovy injection, licensed for weight loss. The MHRA approved it in June 2026, the first oral GLP-1 for weight management in Europe. It suits people who want the benefits of semaglutide without weekly injections.
In the OASIS-4 trial, adults taking oral semaglutide 25mg lost an average of 14% of their body weight over 64 weeks, versus 2% on placebo, around 16.6% when taken as prescribed. Nearly 1 in 3 lost 20% or more. That's broadly similar to the 2.4mg injection.
No. Rybelsus is oral semaglutide at 3mg to 14mg, licensed only for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is oral semaglutide at up to 25mg, licensed for weight loss. Same molecule, different strengths and licensed uses. The Wegovy pill is the version actually approved and studied for weight management.
They deliver similar average weight loss (around 14% to 15%). The injection is weekly and has a licensed cardiovascular benefit; the pill is daily and needle-free. The pill must be taken on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait before eating. The best choice depends on your preferences and medical history.
Take one tablet on an empty stomach when you wake, with only a sip of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or other medicines. Food and liquid reduce absorption. The dose increases gradually, 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, then 25mg. At least a month apart.
Not currently. It's approved and available privately through registered pharmacies like Solira for eligible patients. NHS availability would follow a separate NICE assessment. Private access needs no GP referral, just an online consultation reviewed by our pharmacist.
The Wegovy pill is priced per 28-day supply and rises with each dose step as you titrate from the starting dose to the 25mg maintenance dose. Delivery is charged separately. A pharmacist review is included. There's no separate consultation fee. New customers can use code WELCOME20 for £20 off their first order. See the pricing table on this page for current prices at each dose.
Yes. If you're on the 2.4mg weekly injection you can move straight to the 25mg daily tablet without restarting at the lowest dose. Your pharmacist will confirm the right transition during your consultation.
