How it works

Large-scale randomised controlled trials have demonstrated that 5% minoxidil solution produces significantly better results than 2% solution. In a 48-week study by Olsen et al. (JAAD 2002), 40% of men using 5% minoxidil twice daily showed dense hair regrowth, compared to 16% with the 2% solution. Twice-daily application consistently outperforms once-daily use in clinical studies.

Side effects
Generally well tolerated
Side effects from topical minoxidil are usually mild and local. The most common is scalp irritation, itching, redness, or flaking at the application site, which typically improves with continued use. An initial increase in shedding during the first 2 to 4 weeks is normal and expected. This is old hairs making way for new growth and resolves spontaneously. Avoid contact with the face after application to prevent unwanted facial hair growth. Minoxidil should not be used on broken or inflamed scalp skin.

Yes, minoxidil 5% spray is suitable for women experiencing female pattern hair loss, though women who are pregnant should not use it. The 2% solution is traditionally recommended for women but 5% is widely used.
A reduction in shedding, fewer hairs on the pillow or in the shower, is usually the first sign. Take monthly photos in consistent lighting to track progress. Full results take 6 to 12 months.
Apply minoxidil to a dry, clean scalp before other styling products. Allow it to dry fully (at least 4 hours) before washing. Do not apply immediately before exercise or excessive sweating.
