Stimulating follicles directly at the scalp
The way minoxidil helps hair grow is not fully understood. It is thought to work by widening blood vessels, which improves blood flow to the hair follicles, and by lengthening the growing phase of the hair cycle. Unlike finasteride it does not affect hormones.
What the trials found
Randomised controlled trials have shown that 5% minoxidil solution produces better results than 2% solution. In a 48-week study of 393 men by Olsen et al. (JAAD 2002), 5% minoxidil produced 45% more hair regrowth than the 2% solution and worked earlier.

Simple daily routine
The licensed dose is 1ml applied to the affected area of the scalp twice a day, morning and evening. Do not use more than 2ml in 24 hours, and do not try to make up for a missed application by using extra. This product is licensed for men aged 18 to 65.

Possible side effects
The minoxidil leaflet lists headache as a very common side effect (more than 1 in 10 people), and itching or a rash, unwanted hair growth and shortness of breath as common ones (up to 1 in 10). It can also cause reactions where you apply it, such as itching, irritation, dryness or redness of the scalp. Some men shed more hair when they start: this usually happens 2 to 6 weeks after starting and settles within a couple of weeks, most likely as old hairs make way for new ones. If the extra shedding lasts more than 2 weeks, stop using minoxidil and speak to a pharmacist or doctor. Avoid contact with the face after application to prevent unwanted facial hair growth. Minoxidil should not be used on broken or inflamed scalp skin, and it is not suitable if you have high blood pressure, whether or not it is treated. Stop using it and contact a doctor straight away if you get swollen hands or feet or sudden unexplained weight gain (the leaflet lists both as common), chest pain, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, faintness or dizziness, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or redness, a rash or irritation of the scalp that does not go away. You may need urgent medical treatment.
Other hair loss treatments
There is not enough evidence to recommend using finasteride and minoxidil together.

No. This twice-daily 5% product is licensed for men only and its product information specifically contraindicates use in women. Women with female pattern hair loss need a minoxidil product licensed for women, and minoxidil should not be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Contact us and our pharmacist can advise.
A reduction in shedding, fewer hairs on the pillow or in the shower, is usually the first sign. Take monthly photos in consistent lighting to track progress. The minoxidil leaflet says you may need to use it twice a day for at least 2 months before you see new hair growth, because hair grows slowly. The British Association of Dermatologists says minoxidil needs to be used for at least 6 months, and possibly up to 12, before any benefit may be noticed. If there is no improvement after a year, the leaflet says to stop. If you stop using minoxidil, the leaflet says that within 3 to 4 months your hair may go back to how it was before you started.
Apply minoxidil to a dry, clean scalp before other styling products. Allow it to dry fully (at least 4 hours) before washing. Do not apply immediately before exercise or excessive sweating.
