What is Sildenafil
Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor, the same active ingredient found in Viagra. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis when sexually stimulated, helping you achieve and maintain an erection. It is fully licensed in the UK and available in 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg tablets.

25 years of clinical data
Sildenafil was the first oral PDE5 inhibitor licensed for erectile dysfunction, approved in the UK in 1998. In a 12-week trial reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1998, 69% of attempts at intercourse were successful for men taking sildenafil at doses adjusted between 25mg and 100mg, compared with 22% on placebo. Individual results vary.

Who it's for
Sildenafil is suitable for adult men experiencing erectile dysfunction. Your prescriber will assess your suitability based on your medical history.
Not suitable if you take:
- Nitrates (GTN spray, isosorbide mononitrate/dinitrate)
- Riociguat (Adempas) or vericiguat (Verquvo)
- Or have severe cardiovascular disease
How to take Sildenafil
- Starting dose: 50mg
- Take it about 1 hour before sex (anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours before)

Before you take it

- Sildenafil: avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice.
- These tablets only work with sexual stimulation.
- Most men notice an effect the first or second time. If not, try it 4 to 8 times before deciding it does not work, then tell us.
- If this is your first time with erection problems, see your GP to check your blood sugar, cholesterol and testosterone, and have a heart health check at least every 5 years.
- These tablets can affect your ability to drive or use machines.
- Do not use unlicensed herbal remedies for erections, and do not stop any prescribed medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
- Losing weight, stopping smoking, drinking less alcohol and exercising can all help. If you cycle more than 3 hours a week, try a break from cycling.
- A heavy or high-fat meal can delay how quickly sildenafil, vardenafil and avanafil work. Tadalafil is not affected by food.

Very common / common side effects include headache, dizziness, flushing, nasal congestion, dyspepsia (indigestion), nausea and vision disturbances. Less common side effects are listed in the leaflet in your pack. Please read it before your first dose.

This depends on the nature and severity of your condition. Sildenafil may be suitable if your blood pressure is controlled, you have mild heart valve disease or mild heart failure that does not limit your everyday activity, or you have had a successful bypass, stent or angioplasty. It is not suitable within 6 months of a heart attack or stroke, with unstable angina or angina during sex, or if a doctor has told you sex is not safe for you. Men who take nitrates cannot take it. Your prescriber will assess your cardiovascular history carefully.
