Wegovy Tablets UK: Cost, Doses & Availability (2026)

Short answer: yes, the Wegovy pill is available in the UK. The MHRA authorised Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) for weight management on 11 June 2026, and they are supplied on private prescription after a pharmacist review; they are not routinely available on the NHS. You take one tablet a day, starting at 1.5mg and stepping up, at least a month at a time, through 4mg and 9mg to the 25mg maintenance dose.

When was the Wegovy pill approved in the UK?

The MHRA authorised Wegovy tablets on 11 June 2026. They contain semaglutide, the same medicine as the weekly Wegovy injection, taken as a tablet once a day. The licence covers weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related health condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

In the OASIS 4 trial, 307 adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, took Wegovy tablets 25mg or placebo once a day for 64 weeks alongside diet and activity advice. Those on the tablets lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight, against 2.2% on placebo, counting everyone who started treatment. Individual results vary.

Wegovy tablets are not the same as Rybelsus, an older semaglutide tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes, not for weight management. The differences are in our Wegovy pill vs Rybelsus guide.

Is the Wegovy pill available in the UK?

Yes, on private prescription. In practice, that means getting it through a registered online or high-street pharmacy after a consultation, and no GP referral is needed. The steps are in our guide on how to get Wegovy tablets in the UK.

Not routinely. NICE's current recommendation for semaglutide (TA875) covers the weekly injection, used within NHS specialist weight management services. NICE is now carrying out a wider appraisal of semaglutide for weight management that includes the tablets, with no publication date yet.

What doses does the Wegovy pill come in?

Whatever the dose, you take one tablet a day on an empty stomach after at least 8 hours without food, with a sip of water (up to 120ml), then wait at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other medicines. More in how to take the Wegovy pill.

Who can take the Wegovy pill?

The licence is for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition. At Solira:

Treatment may be suitable if you're aged 18–85 and have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27–29.9 alongside one of the following: type 2 diabetes, prediabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol or blood fats, cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, an obstructive lung condition such as COPD, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or fertility difficulties linked to weight.

How long until you reach the full dose?

With a month at each step (1.5mg, then 4mg, then 9mg), the earliest you reach the 25mg maintenance dose is the start of your fourth month. The licence allows staying at the previous dose if needed, so some people take longer or stay at a lower step; your pharmacist decides the timing with you, based on how you tolerate each step.
