What the trials found
An analysis of five 12-week trials (Brock and colleagues, Journal of Urology, 2002) found that 81% of men taking tadalafil 20mg reported improved erections, compared with 35% on placebo. Side effects
Common side effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dyspepsia (indigestion), back pain, myalgia (muscle aches) and pain in the arms and legs. Less common side effects are listed in the leaflet in your pack. Please read it before your first dose.
Rare but serious: priapism
Before you take it
- Take it about 30 minutes before sex. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to work, and its effect can last more than 24 hours.
- Take one tablet no more than twice a week, and never more than once in 24 hours.
- Tadalafil: avoid grapefruit juice.
- These tablets only work with sexual stimulation.
- Most men notice an effect the first or second time. If not, try it 4 to 8 times before deciding it does not work, then tell us.
- If this is your first time with erection problems, see your GP to check your blood sugar, cholesterol and testosterone, and have a heart health check at least every 5 years.
- These tablets can affect your ability to drive or use machines.
- Do not use unlicensed herbal remedies for erections, and do not stop any prescribed medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
- Losing weight, stopping smoking, drinking less alcohol and exercising can all help. If you cycle more than 3 hours a week, try a break from cycling.
- A heavy or high-fat meal can delay how quickly sildenafil, vardenafil and avanafil work. Tadalafil is not affected by food.
- Tell us or your GP about any side effect. You can also report it to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Common questions
Both are PDE5 inhibitors that work the same way. Tadalafil takes about 30 to 45 minutes to work, and its effect can last more than 24 hours. Sildenafil takes about an hour to work and is short acting. A heavy or high-fat meal can delay how quickly sildenafil works. Tadalafil is not affected by food. Tadalafil can also be taken once a day at a lower dose.
Taking tadalafil every day has not been shown to work better than taking it when needed. On-demand suits occasional use, taken only when needed. Daily tadalafil is for men who expect to have sex at least twice a week, or who prefer not to plan around a tablet.
Alpha-blockers (used for blood pressure and prostate conditions) can interact with tadalafil, causing a drop in blood pressure. Tadalafil cannot be taken with doxazosin. With other alpha-blockers you need to be settled on your dose first, and you start on the lowest dose. If you take an alpha-blocker, we supply tadalafil as a daily 2.5mg tablet rather than one taken when needed. Your prescriber will review your medication list carefully during the consultation.
