How to Get Wegovy Tablets in the UK: A Step-by-Step Guide

Short answer: Wegovy tablets are a prescription medicine, so in the UK you get them after a consultation with a registered pharmacy or a doctor, not over the counter. Privately, that means an online consultation like Solira's: no GP referral is needed, and a GPhC-registered pharmacist reviews your answers before anything is supplied. They are not routinely available on the NHS, where NICE's appraisal that takes in the tablets is still in development.

Wegovy tablets, the oral form of semaglutide licensed for weight management, were authorised by the MHRA on 11 June 2026. In the UK they are prescribed privately. This is the step-by-step of what actually happens.

Step 1: Who is eligible for Wegovy tablets?

In line with the licence, Wegovy tablets are appropriate for adults with:

• A BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or
• A BMI of 27 or above (overweight) with at least one weight-related condition, for example high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or high cholesterol.

There are also situations where the tablets aren't appropriate. The product information says they should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and our service does not supply them to anyone with a history of pancreatitis, type 1 diabetes, or medullary thyroid cancer or MEN-2 in themselves or a blood relative, among other conditions. Your pharmacist will check these during the consultation.

Step 2: What does the online consultation ask?

The consultation takes a few minutes and covers your BMI, health history, current medicines and any red-flag conditions. It's not a form-filling exercise: a GPhC-registered pharmacist reads every answer. If anything needs clarification, they'll message you or arrange a callback.

Step 3: What happens at the pharmacist review?

Once submitted, your consultation goes into the pharmacist's review queue, and new patients have a short video call with the pharmacist before their first supply. If you're borderline on eligibility or on other medicines, the pharmacist may request more information first. That can mean a slight delay, but it is a necessary part of doing this safely.

Step 4: How are Wegovy tablets sent?

Once approved, your first 30 tablets (30-day supply) are dispensed by the pharmacy and posted using tracked delivery. Wegovy tablets come in the maker's 30-tablet pack of blister strips, sent in a plain parcel. Keep the tablets in the original blister pack to protect them from light and moisture. No special temperature storage is needed.

Step 5: How do you take Wegovy tablets in the first month?

You'll start on the 1.5mg dose for a month, taken once a day on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, with up to 120ml of water, then waiting at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are reported most often while the dose is being increased; the product information says most of these effects in the trial were mild to moderate and short-lived. Step 6: How do the doses go up?

The licence steps the dose up from 1.5mg to 4mg, 9mg and then 25mg, with at least a month at each step, so starting at 1.5mg the earliest you reach the 25mg maintenance dose is the start of your fourth month. Each month you reorder your next 30-day supply, and your pharmacist reviews you before every step. Can you get Wegovy tablets on the NHS?

Not routinely. NICE's current recommendation for semaglutide (TA875, 2023) covers the weekly injection, used within NHS specialist weight management services. In October 2026 NICE set out a wider appraisal of semaglutide for weight management that takes in the tablets (ID6699); it is in development, with no publication date yet. Until then, access is through private prescription.

Update, August 2026: a second GLP-1 tablet for weight loss, Foundayo (orforglipron), was approved by the MHRA on 10 August 2026. It is taken once a day at any time of day, without food or water restrictions. It is now available at Solira as a second tablet option.
