Wegovy tablets are the first oral GLP-1 licensed for weight loss in Europe, approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026. They are prescription-only, available privately in the UK. This is the step-by-step of what actually happens.
Step 1. Check the eligibility criteria
In line with the licence, Wegovy tablets are appropriate for adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or
- A BMI of 27 or above (overweight) with at least one weight-related condition. For example high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or high cholesterol.
There are also situations where the tablets aren't appropriate, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a history of pancreatitis, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, type 1 diabetes. Your pharmacist will check these during the consultation.
Step 2. Complete the online consultation
The consultation takes a few minutes and covers your BMI, health history, current medicines and any red-flag conditions. It's not a form-filling exercise, a GPhC-registered pharmacist reads every answer. If anything needs clarification, they'll message you or arrange a callback.
Step 3. Pharmacist review and prescription
Once submitted, your consultation goes into the pharmacist's review queue. Approvals for straightforward cases usually happen the same day. If you're borderline on eligibility or on other medicines, the pharmacist may request more information first, a slight delay, but a necessary part of doing this safely.
Step 4. Dispensing and discreet delivery
Once approved, your first 30 tablets (30-day supply) is dispensed by the pharmacy and posted using tracked delivery. Wegovy tablets come as a 30-tablet pack of blister strips inside a plain, unmarked outer box. Storage is at room temperature, no fridge needed.
Step 5. Your first month on the tablets
You'll start on the 1.5mg dose for a month, taken once a day on an empty stomach with up to 120ml of water, waiting at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines. Most people notice reduced appetite within the first two weeks. Any early nausea usually settles within a couple of weeks. See our first-month expectations guide for the details.
Step 6. Titration and monthly reorders
Each month, you reorder your next dose step (1.5mg → 4mg → 9mg → 25mg), with at least a month at each step. Your pharmacist reviews you before every step, in case a step needs to slow down. Most people reach the 25mg maintenance dose after about four months.

Update, August 2026: a second weight loss tablet, Foundayo (orforglipron), was approved by the MHRA on 10 August 2026. It has no fasting or timing rules at all. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral to get Wegovy tablets? No. Wegovy tablets are available through registered pharmacies via an online consultation. A pharmacist prescriber reviews eligibility, no GP letter or referral needed.
Who is eligible? In line with the licence, adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea. A pharmacist will confirm during the consultation.
How long does it take? The online consultation takes a few minutes. Once your pharmacist has reviewed it, dispensing and dispatch usually happen within one working day.
Is it on the NHS? Not currently. Wegovy tablets are available privately in the UK. NHS access would require a separate NICE assessment.
Can I get it if I've never tried a weight-loss medicine before? Yes, the tablets are a licensed first-line option. Your pharmacist will start you on the 1.5mg dose and step you up gradually.
