Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) mimics GLP-1, a hormone naturally released after eating. By activating GLP-1 receptors in the brain's hypothalamus it reduces hunger signals and increases satiety. It also slows gastric emptying. Crucially, in 2023 Wegovy became the first weight loss medication proven to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events.

Clinical evidence

How it works
The only weight loss injection with a proven cardiovascular benefit. Wegovy reduces appetite, slows digestion, and has demonstrated a 20% reduction in serious cardiovascular events in the landmark SELECT trial.
Start your consultationAppetite suppression
Wegovy activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain's hypothalamus, reducing hunger signals and helping you feel satisfied with smaller portions.
Cardiovascular protection
The SELECT trial showed Wegovy reduced the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death by 20%, the only weight loss medication with this licensed indication.
Slower gastric emptying
Food moves more slowly from the stomach, prolonging the feeling of fullness and reducing the urge to eat between meals.
Titration
Starter doses build tolerability. Weight loss effect builds from 1mg onwards.
A higher 7.2mg dose is available for eligible patients with obesity (BMI 30+) who need additional weight loss.
Eligibility
Treatment may be suitable if your BMI is 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside a weight-related health condition. Our pharmacist will assess your full eligibility during the consultation.
Unlike Mounjaro, Wegovy can be used in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Clinical evidence

In 2026 the MHRA approved a higher 7.2mg maintenance dose of Wegovy for adults with obesity. In the STEP UP trial it produced up to around 21% average weight loss over 72 weeks (about 18.7% on a treatment-policy basis), compared with about 15% at the standard 2.4mg dose. It's reached only after titrating to 2.4mg first, and only where your prescriber judges it appropriate.

Side effects
Like all medicines, Wegovy can cause side effects. Most are mild and improve as your body adjusts to the medication. The side effect profile is similar to Mounjaro though some studies suggest slightly lower incidence of nausea with semaglutide compared to tirzepatide at equivalent weight loss.
Very common (more than 1 in 10)
Nausea · Diarrhoea · Vomiting · Constipation · Decreased appetite
Common (up to 1 in 10)
Indigestion · Abdominal pain · Injection site reactions · Fatigue · Dizziness
Managing them
Starting at the lowest dose and increasing gradually significantly reduces the severity of side effects. Eating smaller meals and staying hydrated helps.

FAQ
Both are weekly injections. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates GLP-1 and GIP receptors and demonstrates greater average weight loss (22.5% vs 15%). Wegovy is the only weight loss medication proven to reduce cardiovascular risk. Your prescriber will advise which is more appropriate for you.
They contain the same ingredient (semaglutide) at different doses. Ozempic (0.5mg to 2mg) is licensed for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy (2.4mg) is licensed specifically for weight management. They are not interchangeable.
Wegovy is available on the NHS through specialist weight management services in limited circumstances. Private services like Solira allow eligible patients to access it without an NHS referral or waiting list.
If within 5 days of your usual day, take it as soon as possible. If more than 5 days have passed, skip and resume your normal schedule the following week. Never take two doses in one week.
Previous prescription weight loss medications (such as orlistat) worked by blocking fat absorption and produced modest average weight loss of 3% to 5%. Wegovy works on the brain and gut to fundamentally reduce appetite, producing average weight loss of 15%, with over half of patients losing more than 15%.
Yes. The MHRA approved the 7.2mg dose in January 2026 and a single-dose 7.2mg pen in April 2026. It's available privately for eligible adults with obesity (BMI 30+). It is not currently on the NHS at this dose. You reach it by titrating to 2.4mg first.
In the STEP UP trial, the 7.2mg dose produced up to around 21% average weight loss over 72 weeks in people who reached and maintained the dose (about 18.7% on a treatment-policy basis), versus about 15% on the standard 2.4mg dose. Around 1 in 3 lost 25% or more. Individual results vary with the dose reached and adherence.
Wegovy is priced by dose, starting from our lowest starter dose and rising as you titrate up, plus £3.99 delivery. New patients get £20 off their first order with code WELCOME20. There's no separate prescription or consultation fee, a pharmacist review is included.
Most people notice reduced appetite within the first week or two, but meaningful weight loss builds over months as the dose increases. In the STEP-1 trial the average was around 15% of body weight over 68 weeks. The early weeks are about tolerability; the weight-loss effect strengthens from the 1mg dose onward.
Yes. Solira is a GPhC-registered pharmacy, so an eligible patient can complete an online consultation reviewed by our pharmacist, no GP appointment or referral needed. You'll need to share an accurate medical history so we can check it's safe for you.
