What is Avanafil
Avanafil (brand name Spedra) is the newest licensed PDE5 inhibitor available in the UK. It has a faster onset and a shorter duration of action than the other PDE5 inhibitors. Take the 100mg or 200mg tablet 15 to 30 minutes before sex, or the 50mg tablet about 30 minutes before. The 100mg and 200mg tablets can work in about 15 minutes. It lasts about 6 hours. Like all PDE5 inhibitors, sexual stimulation is required for it to work.

How quickly does avanafil work?
Take the 100mg or 200mg tablet 15 to 30 minutes before sex, or the 50mg tablet about 30 minutes before. The 100mg and 200mg tablets can work in about 15 minutes. It lasts about 6 hours. In a trial where men tried to have sex about 15 minutes after a dose (Hellstrom and colleagues, Journal of Urology, 2015), 25% of attempts on 100mg and 28% on 200mg were successful, compared with 14% on placebo. It has not been compared directly with other ED tablets for how quickly it works. Individual results vary.

Who it's for
Men with erectile dysfunction who want a tablet that can be taken shortly before sex, or who find the timing required for other treatments inconvenient. It is not suitable if you have severe kidney or liver impairment, and men with mild to moderate liver impairment start on the lowest 50mg dose.
Not suitable if:
- Blood pressure above 170/100 mmHg, or no reading in the last 12 months
- A serious or life-threatening heart rhythm problem in the last 6 months
- Taking tamsulosin or doxazosin
- Taking nitrates, riociguat, vericiguat, or other PDE5 inhibitors
How to take Avanafil
- Starting dose: 100mg. Take it 15 to 30 minutes before sex
- Dose range: 50mg to 200mg. Maximum 200mg once daily
- Not suitable in severe kidney or liver impairment. Start at 50mg if liver impairment is mild or moderate
- Avoid concomitant use with other PDE5 inhibitors

Before you take it

- Avanafil: avoid grapefruit juice in the 24 hours before you take it.
- Avanafil: drinking alcohol at the same time may lower your blood pressure and make you dizzy or faint, especially when you stand up. If this happens, sit or lie down until it passes.
- These tablets only work with sexual stimulation.
- Most men notice an effect the first or second time. If not, try it 4 to 8 times before deciding it does not work, then tell us.
- If this is your first time with erection problems, see your GP to check your blood sugar, cholesterol and testosterone, and have a heart health check at least every 5 years.
- These tablets can affect your ability to drive or use machines.
- Do not use unlicensed herbal remedies for erections, and do not stop any prescribed medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
- Losing weight, stopping smoking, drinking less alcohol and exercising can all help. If you cycle more than 3 hours a week, try a break from cycling.
- A heavy or high-fat meal can delay how quickly sildenafil, vardenafil and avanafil work. Tadalafil is not affected by food.
- Tell us or your GP about any side effect. You can also report it to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Avanafil needs a blood pressure reading below 170/100, taken in the last 12 months. You can choose another treatment, or have your blood pressure checked and come back. For lower levels of high blood pressure that are controlled, our prescriber will assess suitability during your consultation.
