Wegovy Pill vs Rybelsus: What's the Difference?

Short answer: Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus are both semaglutide tablets taken once a day, but they are licensed for different things. Rybelsus is licensed for adults with type 2 diabetes that is not well controlled, at 1.5mg, 4mg and 9mg; Wegovy tablets are licensed for weight management, at the same three steps and then a 25mg maintenance dose. Rybelsus is not licensed for weight loss, and the two are never taken together.

Are Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus the same?

They contain the same medicine, semaglutide, and both are made with salcaprozate sodium, which helps semaglutide be absorbed in the stomach. Both are taken the same way: on an empty stomach after at least 8 hours without food, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to 120ml), then a wait of at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines. Where they differ is the strengths they come in and what they are licensed to treat.

What is Rybelsus used for?

• Licensed for adults with type 2 diabetes that is not well controlled, alongside diet and exercise, to help control blood glucose.
• Doses: 1.5mg for the first month, then 4mg, and 9mg if needed. The UK product information gives 9mg as the highest recommended daily dose.
• These tablets give the same amount of semaglutide as the earlier 3mg, 7mg and 14mg tablets, which the electronic medicines compendium now lists as discontinued.
• Not licensed for weight management. Any weight change on Rybelsus is not the reason it is prescribed.

What are Wegovy tablets used for?

• Licensed for weight management in adults living with obesity (BMI 30 or more), or overweight (BMI 27 or more) with a weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
• Doses: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg, with at least a month at each step. The 25mg dose is the maintenance dose, and if needed the dose can stay at the previous step.
• The 25mg dose is the one studied in OASIS 4, the weight-loss trial the UK product information reports.

Can you take Rybelsus for weight loss?

Rybelsus stops at 9mg. Wegovy tablets share those same first three steps, 1.5mg, 4mg and 9mg, then continue to a 25mg maintenance dose. So the difference that matters is the 25mg step and what each product is licensed for. In OASIS 4, adults taking Wegovy tablets 25mg lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, against 2.2% on placebo, counting everyone who started treatment. Individual results vary, and Rybelsus does not reach that dose. Rybelsus is not licensed for weight management, so using it for weight loss would be outside its licence.

What do Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus have in common?

• The same active ingredient, semaglutide, as one tablet a day: never two tablets to make up a higher dose.

• With either, insulin or a sulphonylurea raises the risk of low blood sugar, so those doses may need lowering. The Rybelsus product information also asks for caution in people with diabetic retinopathy.
• They are never taken together, or with any other GLP-1 medicine.
