Male pattern hair loss is caused by DHT, a hormone that shrinks hair follicles over time. Finasteride reduces the conversion of testosterone into DHT, the hormone behind male pattern hair loss.
The way minoxidil helps hair grow is not fully understood. It is thought to work by widening blood vessels, which improves blood flow to the hair follicles, and by lengthening the growing phase of the hair cycle. Unlike finasteride it does not affect hormones.
This is the Norwood scale, the standard way of describing male pattern hair loss.

Finasteride passes into semen in small amounts. Use a condom if your partner is pregnant or could become pregnant.
Do not use more than 2ml in 24 hours, and do not try to make up for a missed application by using extra.

If it has not helped after a year, we recommend stopping it, and your GP can refer you to a dermatologist if you would like. If you stop taking it, the benefit begins to reverse by six months and is lost by 9 to 12 months.
Uncommon side effects (fewer than 1 in 100 men): lower sex drive, low mood or depression, difficulty getting an erection, and changes in ejaculation, including less semen. In some men, sexual side effects have carried on after they stopped taking finasteride. Sexual side effects have also been linked to changes in mood, including thoughts of suicide. If you have any sexual side effects, ask our pharmacist or your GP for advice. If you notice changes in your mood, such as low mood, depression, anxiety or thoughts of suicide, stop taking finasteride and seek medical advice. Tell our pharmacist or your GP about any side effect, so that a Yellow Card report can be sent to the MHRA. Your prescriber will discuss this with you during the consultation.
Finasteride is suitable for men aged 18 and over experiencing male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is not suitable for women or children. Your prescriber will assess your suitability.

No. This twice-daily 5% product is licensed for men only and its product information specifically contraindicates use in women. Women with female pattern hair loss need a minoxidil product licensed for women, and minoxidil should not be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Contact us and our pharmacist can advise.
A reduction in shedding, fewer hairs on the pillow or in the shower, is usually the first sign. Take monthly photos in consistent lighting to track progress. The minoxidil leaflet says you may need to use it twice a day for at least 2 months before you see new hair growth, because hair grows slowly. The British Association of Dermatologists says minoxidil needs to be used for at least 6 months, and possibly up to 12, before any benefit may be noticed. If there is no improvement after a year, the leaflet says to stop. If you stop using minoxidil, the leaflet says that within 3 to 4 months your hair may go back to how it was before you started.
Apply minoxidil to a dry, clean scalp before other styling products. Allow it to dry fully (at least 4 hours) before washing. Do not apply immediately before exercise or excessive sweating.
