Short answer: on Wegovy, eat small, regular meals with some protein at each one, eaten first, build fibre up gradually, and drink 1.5 to 2 litres of fluid a day. Go easy on very fatty, fried and spicy food, fizzy drinks and alcohol, which tend to make nausea, reflux and burping worse. No food is banned, and Wegovy injections have no food rules at all; Wegovy tablets come with a 30-minute wait before breakfast.

This guide covers both forms of Wegovy: what to eat and what to have less of, how much protein, fibre and fluid, alcohol, injection day and dose increases, a sample day built from our recipes, and what to do when you cannot face food. The facts are as of October 2026.

How does Wegovy change the way you eat?

Semaglutide, the medicine in Wegovy, acts on the parts of the brain that control appetite. In a phase 1 trial described in the UK product information, people on Wegovy 2.4mg ate 35% fewer calories than people on a placebo at a meal where they could eat as much as they liked, after 20 weeks of treatment. They also reported better control of eating, feeling fuller, less hunger, fewer cravings for dairy and savoury foods, less desire for sweet food and a lower preference for high-fat food. Individual results vary.

Semaglutide also delays stomach emptying a little in the period straight after a meal. So portions shrink, and a large or rich meal that you used to manage can now feel heavy or make you feel sick. The British Dietetic Association calls strong thoughts about food that go round and round "food noise", and says these medicines can help reduce or stop them. It also notes that the thoughts can come back over time, or after stopping, and that eating, drinking and moving regularly can make that less likely.

That is why the licence says Wegovy is for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. In the STEP 1, 2 and 4 trials, everyone was asked to eat 500 kcal a day less than they needed and to be active for 150 minutes a week. In our pharmacist's words: Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular activity. Aim for at least 150 minutes a week. Weight loss naturally slows over time, and stopping treatment without keeping lifestyle changes commonly leads to weight regain, so we review you regularly and plan any stop together.

Wegovy injections are once a week, at any time of day, with or without meals. There is nothing you must eat, or avoid, around your dose.

Wegovy tablets come with a timing rule every day: an empty stomach before the tablet, and a 30-minute wait after it before breakfast. The full rule is further down this guide.

What should you eat on Wegovy?

The same healthy, balanced diet the NHS Eatwell Guide describes for everyone, in smaller portions and arranged so the most useful food comes first. Six habits cover most of it.

    • Protein first, at every meal. Eat it before anything else on the plate, so that if you only manage half, you have had the part that matters most. Fish, eggs, chicken, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu, beans and lentils all count.

    • Small meals, no long gaps. Three small meals, with a snack between if you need one, usually suit better than one or two large ones. The British Dietetic Association advises avoiding long gaps between meals, even when portions are small.

    • A small, balanced plate. Some protein, some starchy food (wholegrain where you can) and some vegetables or fruit at each meal. A smaller plate helps when you are not very hungry.

    • Fibre, built up slowly. Oats, wholegrain bread, brown rice, beans, lentils, fruit and vegetables. Add them gradually: a sudden jump can bring on wind and bloating.

    • 1.5 to 2 litres of fluid a day. About 8 glasses, more in hot weather or when you exercise. Water, milk, tea and coffee all count. If you are not very hungry, drink between meals rather than with them.

    • Eat slowly, and stop when you feel full. Fullness comes sooner on Wegovy. Eating and chewing slowly can help your gut feel better, and large meals make being sick more likely.

The short version, in our pharmacist's words: Eat smaller meals, avoid very fatty food, and keep well hydrated.

What foods should you avoid on Wegovy?

None is banned. Wegovy's product information sets no food restrictions for the injection. But some foods are more likely than others to leave you feeling sick, bloated or with heartburn, especially in your first weeks and after each dose increase. Here is a food list, group by group.

Food groupBuild meals aroundHave less often, especially early on
ProteinFish, eggs, chicken, turkey, lean mince, tofu, beans, lentils and chickpeasFried, battered or fatty meat, and processed meat such as bacon and sausages
Starchy foodsOats, wholegrain bread, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, potatoes with their skinsChips and fried potatoes, pastries, and large portions of any starchy food
Fruit and vegetablesMost fruit and vegetables, fresh, frozen or tinnedBig portions of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, onions or dried fruit if wind is a problem
DairyMilk, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, and cheese in small amountsCream, creamy sauces and large amounts of hard cheese
FatsOlive or rapeseed oil, nuts, seeds and avocado, in small amountsButter, ghee, and fried or greasy food
DrinksWater, milk, tea, coffee if it suits you, and sugar-free drinksFizzy drinks, alcohol, sugary drinks, and more than 150ml of fruit juice or smoothie a day
SnacksYoghurt, fruit, oatcakes, a small handful of nuts, edamameCrisps, biscuits, cakes, chocolate and sweets

Wegovy can change your taste for food anyway: a change in the way food or drink tastes is a common side effect, and the 2025 joint advisory notes that people tend to go off sweet, savoury, starchy and high-fat foods. Some go off particular foods altogether, most often when starting or after a dose increase. Mild, simple food is usually easiest at those times.

Which foods make nausea, reflux and sulphur burps worse on Wegovy?

Stomach side effects are the most common side effects of Wegovy. In the four main trials in the UK product information, over 68 weeks on Wegovy 2.4mg, nausea affected 43.9% of people compared with 16.1% on placebo, diarrhoea 29.7% compared with 15.9%, vomiting 24.5% compared with 6.3%, and constipation 24.2% compared with 11.1%. Most were mild to moderate and short-lived, and they were reported most often while the dose was going up. Burping, wind, bloating, indigestion and reflux are common too. The NHS and the British Dietetic Association give food advice for each of them:

    SymptomOften makes it worseOften helps
Feeling sickHot, fried or greasy food, strong-smelling food, eating too quickly, a large drink with a meal, lying down soon after eating, long gaps without foodSmaller, more frequent meals starting with a small breakfast, sips of a cold drink, ginger or peppermint tea, foods with ginger in them, fresh air
Reflux and heartburnFatty or spicy food, coffee, tomatoes, chocolate, alcohol, eating within 3 or 4 hours of bedSmaller, more frequent meals, finishing your last meal 3 to 4 hours before bed, clothes that are loose around your waist
Burping, sulphur burps, wind and bloatingFizzy drinks and beer, eating quickly, large or fatty meals, and foods that cause wind, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, beans, onions and dried fruitSmaller meals more often, eating and chewing slowly, peppermint tea
ConstipationToo little fluid, too little fibre, sitting still for long periods, alcoholPlenty of fluid, fibre added gradually (oats, wholegrains, beans, fruit), prunes, apples, apricots, grapes, raspberries or strawberries, a daily walk
DiarrhoeaLarge or high-fat mealsSmaller, plainer meals, and sipping fluids to replace what you lose

None of these foods is harmful, and some, like beans and lentils, are good sources of fibre and protein. If one bothers you, have less of it for a while and try it again once your dose has settled. The British Dietetic Association lists burps with a bad smell among the usual side effects of these medicines; our guide to sulphur burps on Wegovy explains them, and Wegovy side effects covers the rest, including the warning signs.

How much protein do you need on Wegovy?

The weight you lose on these medicines is not all fat. A 2026 review of 35 trials of semaglutide, tirzepatide and similar medicines found that a median of about 28% of the weight lost came from muscle and other lean tissue. The 2025 joint advisory makes enough protein a priority for keeping muscle, together with strength exercise.

The British Dietetic Association's advice is simple: protein at each of your three meals, with no need to weigh your food or use a protein calculator. If you would like a number, the advisory suggests a simple target of 80 to 120g a day, which may be easier to stick to than working it out per kilo of body weight. This is roughly what common portions give (typical figures; labels vary):

    FoodProtein, about
    2 eggs13g
    Fat-free Greek yoghurt, 150g15g
    Porridge made with 200ml milk12g
    2 slices wholemeal toast8g
    Chicken breast, 120g cooked37g
    Salmon fillet, about 120g25g
    Small tin of tuna, drained25g
    Cooked lentils or beans, 200g16g
    Firm tofu, 150g18g
    Cottage cheese, 150g15g
    Glass of milk, 300ml11g
    Handful of nuts, 30g6g

The advisory suggests smaller-volume protein foods such as fish, eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, nuts and nut butters, which give protein without a lot of bulk. If you have kidney disease, check with your GP or pharmacist before you eat more protein.

Protein on its own is not enough: the advisory says it is unlikely to keep muscle without strength training, and suggests strength training at least three times a week alongside treatment. The NHS advises strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week for every adult. Resistance bands, body weight exercises such as standing up from a chair, and lifting weights or heavy shopping all count.

How much fibre and water should you have on Wegovy?

    • Fibre30g a day

The UK guideline for adults. Most adults eat only about 20g, and eating less on Wegovy usually means less fibre too, so it needs some planning.

    • Fluid1.5 to 2 litres

About 8 glasses a day, the British Dietetic Association's guide, and more when it is hot, when you exercise, or if you are being sick or have diarrhoea.

To reach 30g, the NHS gives examples: two slices of wholemeal toast with peanut butter and an orange come to about 8g; wholemeal spaghetti with a lentil and tomato sauce about 11g; grilled chicken with a skin-on baked potato, carrots and green beans about 11g. Build up gradually, and drink more as you do: fibre without enough fluid can make constipation worse. In the first few days of treatment, if you feel sick, the advisory suggests going easy on very fatty and very high-fibre foods, then building fibre up.

For fluid, sip through the day rather than waiting to feel thirsty, which is easy to miss when your appetite is low. Pale yellow pee is the sign you are drinking enough. Wegovy's leaflet says it is important to drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration, because feeling or being sick and diarrhoea can cause it. Fruit juice and smoothies count, but the NHS suggests no more than 150ml a day combined. If constipation is already a problem, our guide to constipation on Mounjaro covers what to try, and the steps are the same on Wegovy.

Can you drink alcohol on Wegovy?

The NHS advises that it is best not to drink alcohol on semaglutide, because it can increase side effects like feeling or being sick. The 2025 joint advisory adds that alcohol may make nausea and reflux worse on GLP-1 treatment and should be kept to a minimum, and the British Dietetic Association suggests limiting or avoiding it. If you do drink:

    • Keep within the UK low-risk guideline of no more than 14 units a week, spread over 3 or more days, with several drink-free days.
    • Drink with food, more slowly, and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks.
    • Avoid the first few days after a dose increase, when stomach side effects are most likely.
    • Remember that alcohol adds calories, and fizzy mixers and beer add gas.
    • If you have type 2 diabetes and use insulin or a sulfonylurea, know the signs of low blood sugar (sweating, shaking, sudden hunger, confusion) and treat promptly.

For more on drinking during Wegovy treatment, see Wegovy and alcohol.

What should you eat on Wegovy injection day?

Nothing special. Wegovy is injected once a week at any time of day, with or without meals, so you do not need to eat first or skip a meal afterwards. What can change is how you feel: the British Dietetic Association notes that side effects can change from week to week, especially after the weekly injection. If you notice a pattern, such as feeling sick the day after your dose, plan for it:

    • Keep the next day's meals small and plain. Soup, eggs on toast, yoghurt, porridge or cottage cheese, with protein in each. Our soft scrambled eggs with spinach and red lentil and tomato soup are made for days like this.

    • Have easy food in the house. A batch of soup in the freezer, yoghurt in the fridge, oatcakes, ginger biscuits and ginger or peppermint tea, so a bad day does not become a day without food.

    • Keep sipping. Small amounts of fluid often, all day, even if you are not eating much.

    • Pick an injection day that suits your week. If you need to move your injection day, you can, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) pass between two doses. Then inject on your new day each week.

What should you eat when your Wegovy dose goes up?

Your dose usually goes up every 4 weeks, from 0.25mg through 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg to 2.4mg, and some people later move to 7.2mg. The Wegovy dose schedule sets out every step. Stomach side effects are reported most often in the weeks the dose is going up, so treat the first week at each new dose as a reset:

    1. Go back to small, plain meals. Even if you were eating more the week before. Mild food, smaller portions, and stop at the first sign of fullness.

    2. Keep the protein going. Start each meal with it, and use milk or a yoghurt drink if solid food is hard.

    3. Hold off on rich food and alcohol. Very fatty, fried or spicy meals and alcohol tend to make nausea and reflux worse, and the first week at a new dose is when those are most likely.

    4. Drink more, not less. Sip through the day. If you are being sick or have diarrhoea, you lose fluid faster.

    5. Tell your pharmacist if a step is hard. Wegovy's product information allows staying on your current dose for longer, or going back to the previous dose until symptoms improve. Being unable to eat or drink is a reason to talk to us, not to push on.

What does a day of eating on Wegovy look like?

Treat this as a shape rather than a prescription: portions should follow your appetite on the day. Every dish is one of our recipes for smaller appetites, each showing about how much protein and how many calories a portion has.

    WhenWhatProtein, about
BreakfastOvernight oats with yoghurt and raspberries. Made the night before, so there is nothing to cook. On Wegovy tablets, eat it at least 30 minutes after your tablet.22g
Mid-morningCottage cheese and cucumber oatcakes. A small snack keeps the gap between meals short.10g
LunchRed lentil and tomato soup. Soup is often easier to manage than a heavier meal when your appetite is low.20g
AfternoonEdamame with lemon. A small snack with some protein, if you want one.12g
Evening mealLemon baked cod with crushed potatoes and peas. A plain, mild meal. If reflux troubles you, finish eating 3 to 4 hours before bed.29g
Through the dayA 300ml glass of semi-skimmed milk, plus water, tea or other drinks to make 1.5 to 2 litres.11g

That day comes to about 105g of protein, inside the 80 to 120g range, and about 1,300 kcal. The 2025 joint advisory notes that getting enough vitamins and minerals gets harder below about 1,200 kcal a day for women and 1,800 for men, so men in particular may need larger portions or an extra snack.

To build a week, rotate the recipes rather than repeating one day:

What if you can't face food on Wegovy?

A very small appetite can feel like the medicine working, but eating too little has costs. The 2025 joint advisory notes that getting enough vitamins and minerals gets harder below about 1,200 kcal a day for women and 1,800 for men, and names iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and vitamins A, D, E, K, B1, B12 and C as the nutrients most at risk. Too little protein, with too little activity, can mean losing more muscle, which the British Dietetic Association warns can leave your body weak.

Feeling weak or tired is also a very common side effect of Wegovy, which may affect more than 1 in 10 people, and the British Dietetic Association lists feeling dizzy, tired, losing hair or a low mood as signs that you may not be eating enough. Our guide to tiredness on Wegovy covers the other causes. When food feels like too much:

    • Eat by the clock, not by hunger. Hunger may barely show up. A small breakfast, then something small every 3 to 4 hours, with a reminder on your phone if you forget.

    • Drink some of your protein. Milk, a yoghurt drink or a smoothie made with milk or yoghurt is often easier than a plate of food.

    • Choose soft, simple food. Soup, yoghurt, cottage cheese, eggs and porridge are often more appealing than heavier food such as red meat or hard cheese.

    • Keep drinking, even when you cannot eat. Small sips often. If you are being sick or have diarrhoea, a pharmacist can recommend an oral rehydration solution to replace the salts you lose.

If you can't keep fluids down for more than 24 hours, contact your prescriber. If you are eating very little most days, tell your pharmacist: there may be something to change, such as the pace of your dose increases.

What to eat on Wegovy tablets: the 30-minute rule

Wegovy tablets are the one form of Wegovy where food timing matters every day. Our pharmacist's instructions:

One tablet, once a day. Timing is everything. Take your tablet on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours (for most people, first thing in the morning). Swallow it whole with up to 120 ml of water. Don't split, crush or chew it. Then wait at least 30 minutes before any food, drink, or other medicines taken by mouth. The 30-minute wait includes water beyond the small amount you take the tablet with, and yes, that includes your morning tea or coffee. Eating or drinking sooner significantly reduces how much medicine your body absorbs, which means it simply won't work as well.

In practice, breakfast is your first food of the day, at least 30 minutes after the tablet, and any vitamins or other supplements go with breakfast or later, never with the tablet. After that, everything in this guide applies to the tablets too. The tablets cause the same kind of stomach side effects: Very common (more than 1 in 10): headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion, stomach pain, feeling weak or tired. These are most noticeable while your dose is increasing and usually settle. Eat smaller meals, avoid very fatty food, and keep well hydrated. Our guide on how to take the Wegovy pill covers the rule in more detail.

Do you need vitamins or supplements on Wegovy?

Food comes first, and a varied diet of the kind above is the starting point. The NHS advises everyone to consider a daily 10 microgram vitamin D supplement in autumn and winter, whether or not they take Wegovy. If you are eating very little for weeks at a time, or you notice tiredness that does not lift or more hair loss than you expected, ask your pharmacist: a blood test tells you more than guessing. Our guide to vitamins and supplements on Mounjaro or Wegovy sets out what the research shows.

No food or supplement does what Wegovy does. Be wary of anything sold as a natural alternative to Wegovy or a GLP-1 booster, and only get Wegovy itself from a registered UK pharmacy: our safety page explains how to check.

See also what to eat on Mounjaro, a diet plan that protects your muscle, Wegovy side effects and our recipes.

When to see your pharmacist or doctor

Stop your treatment and seek urgent medical help if you experience: severe, persistent stomach pain, especially spreading to your back, with or without vomiting. This can be a sign of pancreatitis. Sudden pain in the upper right of your tummy, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes: possible gallbladder problems. Sudden loss of vision, or loss of part of your field of vision: seek same-day eye assessment. Swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash: call 999.

Seek advice promptly if you notice: signs of dehydration during vomiting or diarrhoea (dizziness, reduced urination, dry mouth): keep sipping fluids, as dehydration can affect your kidneys; palpitations or a racing heartbeat at rest; a new neck lump, swelling, or hoarseness. If you have type 2 diabetes and use insulin or a sulfonylurea, know the signs of low blood sugar (sweating, shaking, sudden hunger, confusion) and treat promptly.

    • If you can't keep fluids down for more than 24 hours, contact your prescriber.
    • You are eating very little most days, or often feel dizzy, weak or very tired.
    • Nausea or vomiting stops you eating or drinking, or does not settle.
    • Constipation is severe, or comes with stomach pain, bloating or being sick.

If eating feels difficult in a way that goes beyond appetite, if you find yourself anxious about food, restricting deliberately, or worried about your relationship with eating, please raise it with your pharmacist or GP. It's a common thing to experience and there's proper support available.

    Frequently asked questions

Small, regular meals with some protein at each one, eaten first: fish, eggs, chicken, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu, beans or lentils. Add wholegrain starchy foods and fruit or vegetables, build fibre up gradually, and drink 1.5 to 2 litres of fluid a day. Eat slowly and stop when you feel full. Very fatty, fried and spicy food, fizzy drinks and alcohol tend to make nausea, reflux and burping worse, so have them less often, especially in the first weeks and after a dose increase.

No food is banned on Wegovy. The ones most worth cutting back are very fatty, fried or greasy food, spicy food, large meals, fizzy drinks, sugary food and drink, and alcohol, because they tend to make feeling sick, reflux, burping or diarrhoea worse. If a food upsets you, have less of it for a while rather than cutting out whole food groups.

Have some protein at every meal and eat it first. The British Dietetic Association says you do not need to weigh your food or use a protein calculator. If you would like a number, a 2025 joint advisory from four obesity and nutrition societies suggests a simple target of 80 to 120g a day. If you have kidney disease, check with your GP or pharmacist before you eat more protein.

There is no single number. In the main Wegovy weight-management trials (STEP 1, 2 and 4), everyone was asked to eat 500 kcal a day less than they needed and to be active for 150 minutes a week. The NHS puts average needs at about 2,000 kcal a day for women and 2,500 for men, though yours depend on your size and how active you are. Because Wegovy turns your appetite down, it is also worth checking you are not eating too little: a 2025 joint advisory notes that getting enough vitamins and minerals gets harder below about 1,200 kcal a day for women and 1,800 for men.

No. Wegovy injections can be given at any time of day, with or without meals, so there is nothing you need to eat or avoid around your dose. If you notice that you feel sick in the day or two after your injection, plan smaller, plainer meals for those days and keep sipping fluids.

The NHS advises that it is best not to drink alcohol on semaglutide, the medicine in Wegovy, because it can increase side effects like feeling or being sick. If you do drink, keep within the UK low-risk guideline of no more than 14 units a week, drink with food, and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks. If you have type 2 diabetes and use insulin or a sulfonylurea, know the signs of low blood sugar (sweating, shaking, sudden hunger, confusion) and treat promptly.

At least 30 minutes after it. After the wait, eat as you normally would, starting with some protein.

Eat small amounts every 3 to 4 hours rather than waiting to feel hungry, and start each one with protein. Drinks and soft foods count: milk, a yoghurt drink, a smoothie made with milk or yoghurt, soup or cottage cheese are often easier than a full plate. A reminder on your phone can help. If you can't keep fluids down for more than 24 hours, contact your prescriber.
