Short answer: about 3 in 10 adults in the UK are living with obesity. When adults in England were measured for the Health Survey for England in 2024, 29.9% were living with obesity (a BMI of 30 or more) and 65.6% were overweight or living with obesity. The figure was 31% in Scotland (2024) and 30% in Northern Ireland (2024/25). Among children in England, 10.5% in Reception and 22.2% in Year 6 were living with obesity in 2024/25.

This page gathers the latest official figures in one place, each with its source and the year it covers: the four UK nations, adults in England by age, sex, deprivation, region and every council area, children, and what obesity costs. Figures are as the sources publish them: to one decimal place where their tables give one. Last checked 24 October 2026.

    Obesity across the UK

Each nation runs its own survey, so their methods differ: some measure people, some ask them. The table gives each nation's latest published figure for adults, with how it was collected, so read it as close to, not exactly, like for like.

Adults in England, measured: the Health Survey for England

The Health Survey for England measures people's height and weight at home. In 2024, 29.9% of adults aged 16 and over were living with obesity, up from 14.9% in 1993, and 65.6% were overweight or living with obesity, up from 52.9%. 3.4% had severe obesity, a BMI of 40 or more. Obesity was similar in women (30.6%) and men (29.2%), but men were more likely to be overweight or living with obesity (69.5%, against 61.8% of women).

How has adult obesity in England changed?

For year-by-year and local figures, England also has the Active Lives Adult Survey, which asks people their height and weight; its figures come out somewhat lower than the measured ones. In it, the share of adults living with obesity rose from 22.6% in 2015/16 to 26.6% in 2024/25. The share overweight or living with obesity rose from 61.2% to 64.6%.

Obesity by council area in England

Of England's 296 council areas, Sunderland had the highest estimated share of adults living with obesity in 2024/25 (42.6%) and Camden the lowest (10.4%). Each council figure comes from a survey sample, of a few hundred adults in most areas, so it carries a margin of error: the table gives the range the true figure is 95% likely to sit in. Sunderland's, for example, is 38.7% to 46.7%. Two areas a few points apart may not really differ.

    Children living with obesity

In England, children in state-funded schools are weighed and measured in Reception (aged 4 to 5) and Year 6 (aged 10 to 11). In 2024/25, 10.5% of Reception children and 22.2% of Year 6 children were living with obesity, and 2.9% and 5.6% with severe obesity. Children in the most deprived areas were more than twice as likely to be living with obesity as those in the least deprived.

1,145,893 children measured. Source: OHID, National Child Measurement Programme, England, 2024/25 school year (published 4 November 2025). New figures are due on 3 November 2026. Children's categories compare each child with others of the same age and sex, so they are not the adult BMI bands.

In Wales, 12.8% of children aged 4 to 5 were living with obesity in 2024/25, the highest figure since the Child Measurement Programme for Wales began, and 27.3% were overweight or living with obesity (Public Health Wales, published 12 May 2026).

What does obesity cost the UK?

A government announcement of 27 June 2026 put the cost of obesity at up to £107 billion a year to UK society, including more than £9 billion a year for the NHS, citing estimates by Nesta and Frontier Economics (2025).

How many people use weight-loss medicines?

In a University College London survey of adults in Great Britain in January to March 2025, 2.9%, about 1.6 million adults, said they had used one of the newer weight-loss injections or tablets to lose weight in the past year, and about 910,000 had used one only for weight loss. The figures are what people reported, scaled up to the adult population (Jackson and others, BMC Medicine, January 2026).

    How these figures are measured

For adults, obesity means a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, and overweight 25 to 29.9, the categories NICE uses (guideline NG246). BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared; you can work out your own with our BMI calculator, which sends and stores nothing. For children, BMI is compared with children of the same age and sex, so their categories are not the adult ones.

Some of the figures here come from surveys that measure people's height and weight (the Health Survey for England, Northern Ireland's survey and the child measurement programmes), and some from surveys that ask people to report them (the Active Lives survey and the National Survey for Wales). Self-reported figures tend to come out lower, so numbers from different sources are not directly comparable. Each table names its source and year.

    Frequently asked questions

About 3 in 10 adults. England 29.9% (2024, Health Survey for England); Scotland 31% (2024, Scottish Health Survey); Wales 24.7% (April 2024 to March 2025, National Survey for Wales); Northern Ireland 30% (2024/25, Health Survey Northern Ireland). The surveys collect height and weight in different ways, so the figures are close to, not exactly, like for like.

29.9% of adults aged 16 and over were living with obesity (a BMI of 30 or more) and 65.6% were overweight or living with obesity in 2024, when the Health Survey for England measured them. The Active Lives Adult Survey, which asks people their height and weight, gives 26.6% and 64.6% for 2024/25, and is the source for each region and council area.

In the 2024/25 school year, 10.5% of children in Reception (aged 4 to 5) and 22.2% in Year 6 (aged 10 to 11) were living with obesity, according to the National Child Measurement Programme, which measured 1,145,893 children. New figures are due on 3 November 2026.

Of England's regions, North East had the highest share of adults living with obesity in 2024/25, 33.1%, and London the lowest, 20.4%. Of the 296 council areas, Sunderland had the highest estimate (42.6%) and Camden the lowest (10.4%). Council figures come from survey samples, so each has a margin of error; the table on this page gives it.

Yes. In the Health Survey for England, adult obesity doubled from 14.9% in 1993 to 29.9% in 2024. In the Active Lives survey, the share of adults living with obesity rose from 22.6% in 2015/16 to 26.6% in 2024/25.

For adults in the UK, a BMI of 30 or more counts as obesity and 25 to 29.9 as overweight, the categories NICE uses (guideline NG246). BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It does not suit everyone, for example during pregnancy, and it is not used the same way for children, whose BMI is compared with others of the same age and sex.
